Google is big. Really big and is practically controlling a major part of the world wide web. Google has got the largest visitors on earth. Whatever people are searching for, they do it first with Google. In Nigeria, it's the same scenario, with the growing online community and queries coming up from the world's largest black nation, Google is home to a major part of Nigeria's online community such that if a Nigerian company wants a platform to connect with Nigerians on the internet, advertising with Google will give them the greatest leverage. Yes, Nigerians can advertise online using Google adwords.

Google adwords: Advertising online in Nigeria
Google has an advertising programme it calls Google Adwords.
Google adwords is a service that allows Google customers advertise on the Google network and this network includes mainly the search engine results and then others such as Gmail, blogger, Youtube and other third party and partner websites which includes the content websites of Adsense publishers.
Content websites are already growing in Nigerian with blogs and forums being set up by Nigerian webmasters, doing product and service reviews of Nigerian companies. A Nigerian company wishing to advertise on these websites as well as on Google search results needs not go far in dealing with the various publishers, all they need do is sign up for the Google adwords prorgamme by signing up at http://adwords.google.com/ and you don't need to pay just yet until you are ready to run an advertising campaign.

Setting up an Adwords Campaign
After signing up with Google, all you need to do next is to create a campaign. An advertising campaign can be text or multimedia ads that you want Google to deliver across its network. It can be a static text link telling people about your product or service, for instance:

And you are done. Now to be able to publish your campaign online and get it running, you will need a valid credit card and this you can get from any Nigerian bank offering Mastercard or Visa (Intercontinental bank, Zenith bank, UBA all offer this) with as little as a $100 and then set you daily budget at say $5 after which you ads will stop running till the next day.

If you would like to advertise online on a particular website (like Multidox), then you can use the site targeting tool located within you Google adwords account and target the particular website. Prices for site targeting can be much cheaper than if you were advertising on the entire Google network on a particular keyword.

Keywords
Keywords are what trigger the display of Google ads on the network. For instance, if people search for a particular keyword like music, mp3, Genevieve Nnaji or Nigerian movies and you have bid on any of these keywords for as low as $0.10, then your advert would show on Google search results by the side or on top depending on how much you have bid and how much your competitors have also bid on it. If you also want to advertise on a particular Nigerian websites that draws a lot of traffic from Google and allows Google ads, then you can also use site targeting and target that particular page using the triggering keyword. Keywords are what matter and how much you spend on it will determine how many times your adverts will be displayed on Google.

Is Google advertising too complicated?
Not everyone would have the time and energy to get into the complex nature of running and maintaining an advertising campaign using Google adwords. If you would rather not manage the issue of online advertising yourself, then you can subcontract it out to Nigerian companies offering internet advertising services.
These companies may offer to run online advertising for you may offer it only on the Google adwords platform or include other advertising companies like Adbrite, direct advertising and others. However, whatever you do, try to get a flat fee for your adverts and don't run and online advertising campaign that is unregulated.

Final notes
The good thing about using Google adwords is that you can set a monthly budget that works best for you. I mean at a low cost of $0.10 per click and a daily cost of say $1, there is no better deal. Google adwords surely rocks!

    I don't understand what you mean by you can't pay online. You mean at the Google adwords site? I have made payments myself using a Visa card given by a Nigerian bank. They accept credit cards from Nigeria. The one I used was a Visa card funded with $150

    I believe Adwords definitely rocks judging from Google power, but for Nigerians, i think there has to be more in terms of advertising online like Nigerian Classified sites and Face book also. But in general Nigerians need loads of awareness. For the best effect though, a blend of online and offline is perfect for Nigerians for now till internet use is full blown.

    If you want to use your GTBank debit card to make payment for adwords, you will need to activate it first at your bank. Go to your bank and tell them you want to activate it for online use. I think they will give you a hardware token or something to use online. You can't just start using your GTBank naira mastercard if it has not been activated for online use. You may also get a prepaid dollar visa card from intercontinental bank

    I just read through your content and based on the fact that I am a newbie in Google Adwords campaign, I want to know if Google collects money from your credit card at all. I asked this because for the past 15 days I have been on adwords, my credit card amount has remained fairly fixed while my adverts are still displayed by Google.

    I also want to know have effective is the advertising strstegy of adbrite and other online advertising companies.

    Google will definitely collect the money. Maybe your credit card provider has not reflected it in your statement but Google collects the money immediately you make a deposit

    Google adwords is definitely a great way to promote any site on the internet, i once used it and it worked wonders, but with the new social media integration today, you can actually promote your website by yourself without paying anything.
