A lot of people get confused as to why they need a separate software program to protect their computer against viruses when they already have a full Operating system that seems capable of doing that.

Well, I guess that's where many antivirus software companies also make their money as they sell high performing software that protects your computer system in a way that your operating system may not be able to.

If you have a Windows Operating system running on your computer, it's reasonable to think that a computer that runs on such a complex program should be fully protected against external viruses but in reality, it's not always the case. While a Windows Operating system does come with some virus fighting capabilities, it does a lot of other work that doesn't make it as efficient in fighting off computer viruses as specialized softwares like Norton's or Mcafee does.

I recently wanted to renew my Norton Antivirus subscription and found out that my bill was about $40 and then I wanted to know why the Windows OS doesn't come completely packaged with all the software that we need. Well, I've found out that Windows has some virus fighting capability but it may not be as efficient as Norton's or others.

In a bid to provide a specialized antivirus software to Windows OS users, Microsoft has introduced a new software that will better protect your computer against viruses and this is for people who already have genuine Windows OS installed on their computers - It's called Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft's Security Essentials is available online for free to Windows users and can be downloaded here

It's basically an antivirus software that works with Windows and it helps protect your computer against most viruses, spyware and other malicious software. It's good enough to protect your Windows operating system against external attacks so that it may be able to work efficiently. It is designed to support Windows 7 systems and higher.
