Anyone interested in snail farming? Its quite eaasy and requires less effort and capital 2 start, it might interest u 2 know that u can actually start a snail farm without a Kobo.

I got interested many months back and after my youth service I attended 2 seminars, searched for materials, and I about 5 months into it and its really a pleasant experience.

Even if u complain of "Space" in ur house, I've got good news 4 you. You could raise snails in ur balcony, corridor and even in ur room. If u cud keep an aquarium in ur living room, then it is possible to raise snails with the smallest available space.

    You can read this article i got from businessdayonline.com:

    "The full potential of snail farming in Nigeria is yet to be realized. To achieve this, better awareness is needed in that line of agriculture which has the capacity of providing jobs through self empowerment to the teeming population of unemployed persons in the country. Apart from the fact that snail is widely consumed in Nigeria such that the output of the few farmers rearing it do not satisfy the demand of consumers, there is also a huge international market for it waiting to be tapped.
    Jake Chuku, a Ghana-based Nigerian farmer has this to say about the business viability of snail farming; "Snail is widely consumed in Nigeria , yet people have not considered the viability of going into it for commercial purpose. Very few persons who have ventured into the business have been able to achieve little because of their crude approach which is not businesslike." The demand for snail surely outstrips its supply in Nigeria and there is indeed a booming international market for it in Europe and North America . For instance, in France , the annual requirement is about five million kilogramme (kg) and over 60 per cent of that is imported. The estimated annual consumption in Italy is 306 million snails. In West Africa, snail meat has traditionally been a major ingredient of the diet of people living in the high forest belt like in Cote d'Ivoire , which estimates indicates eats 7.9 million kg annually.
    In spite of the considerable external and local demand, commercial snail farms such as those in Europe, South-East Asia and the Americas do not exist in West Africa . In Nigeria , Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire where snail meat is particularly popular, snails are gathered from the forest. In recent times, Nigerians have started venturing into that area, but effort needs to be intensified towards satisfying the local market and subsequently get a share of the foreign market.
    Many species of edible land snails are recognized but the popular species of economic interest is the West Africa giant snails; Archachatina Marginata and Achatina-Achatina. According to Chuku, Achatina-Achatina is very good for commercialization because of its profitability. This is because of the volume of eggs it lays at once. Each achatina lays 300 to 500 eggs at a time in clutches, three times a year. Therefore, if you start a farm with about 1000 snails, in one year you would be getting about 1.5 million snails. This proves snail business is very lucrative if properly done.
    To properly nurture snail, there is a need to know some of its characteristics, advised the farm consultant. They include:
    Snails are vegetarians, they feed on vegetables and fruits, and this informs its rich content in protein (up to 61%), vitamins and other minerals but very low in fats (0.05 per cent Snails are hermaphrodites, that is, both the male and female snails reproduce (this is very useful for the farmer for multiplication purpose); Snails eat only at night and reproduce only during rainy season; Snails have a life span of 10 years in their natural habitat;
    Snails mature in their natural habitat from egg to maturity stage between five to eight months; & nbsp;
    Chuku assured that when snails are kept in suitable condition and fed well, the result is usually tremendous. So when the farmer creates the appropriate conditions for the snails, put them in a dark and humid enclosure and feed them well, they would grow faster, bigger, live longer and also taste better.The humid atmosphere the enclosure would create makes the snails to reproduce more often than in their natural habitat because such enclosure creates a permanent rainy season atmosphere.
    Again, while they become able to reproduce between five to eight months in their natural habitat, they start the process in five months when domesticated. The age that is most suitable for eating would also be easily identified when nurtured, while in their natural habitat this would be difficult to identify. By five to eight months, snails are ready for eating and the ultimate age for eating is 18 months, above which the nutritional value depreciates. Apart from its rich nutritional value, snails also have medicinal value. There are claims that they are useful in the treatment of stomach ulcer, anemia, hypertension, and hemorrhoid and to restore virility and vitality in men.

    .Starting a snail farm
    To start up a snail farm, it is advisable to get snails directly from the forest instead of buying from the market after they have been exposed to sunlight and have dehydrated. This is because snails drink a lot of water, so are easily dehydrated and this stresses them out, while reducing their fertility. Chuku said snail farming could be started without spending money.
    The intending snail farmer could pick the snails from the bush with a very simple technique; clear a little portion of land during rainy season and sprinkle spicy fruits like pineapple, pawpaw, plantain, banana etc at about 5o'clock in the evening, when you go back there about 7pm or 8pm, you will pick up snails.
    Another way could be to pick up snail eggs littered in the market place where it is sold and through a technique, check the fertility of the eggs, because some of them must have lost fertility due to the exposure to sunlight. The eggs are later put inside a container containing wet sand and covered with cocoyam leaf. Between 21 to 28 days, the eggs would hatch into baby snails. You start feeding them and gradually you raise a snail farm.

    Importance of snail rearing
    . When reared at home, snails can be made available throughout the year without going to search for them in the forest, thus avoiding the hazards involved in snail-picking, such as snake-bites.
    . Snails kept in captivity can be made to grow faster by giving them highly nutritious compound feed, and they also multiply faster because their predators and enemies are controlled.
    . Scarcity of snails during dry season makes them quite expensive during this time of year; therefore, the farmer can take the advantage of the increase in prices to make more profit.

    Well to start, what you will need are the small snails which you can buy at N50 each from the market and also have space where they will leave like in a garden. You can feed them on available stuff like green leaves from pawpaw, Ugwu, e.t.c There can feed from a whole lot of fresh greens and waste from your kitchen. When they are old enough and mature after like 10 months, you can sell them at N100 each.

    Snails can feed on most leaves like pawpaw leaves, vegetables and so on.

    What do snails eat? In their natural habitat, land snails eat mushrooms, fruit, leaves and any other kind of vegetation they can find. Mostly, snails eat living plants, but also eat decaying ones. Other forms of food include plant bark, flowers and algae. In order to get a nutritional supply of calcium for their shells, snail food includes limestone and they also eat chalk from rocks. Snails have even been known to eat damp paper and cardboard!
