Nigeria is just one country that has so many different people of different tribes joined all together. This has been a major social as well as political problem ever since we became independent. We have Igbos, Yorubas, Hausas, Fulanis, Tivs, Ijaws, Itsekiris and the rest all muddled together as one country and it's still a miracle that we have accepted to remain united as one nation cos there are only few countries in the world where this kind of arangement exists and yet remain successful. If not for exemplary successful nations like the USA, we would have lost hope about our successful existence as a people. However we cannot rule out the fact that tribalism does not still exist in Nigeria even from the top. An Igbo man is more likely to trust another Igbo man due to the fact that they share the same language, have long historical bonds and a similar way of life, likewise for Yoruba and Hausa. A Yoruba - Igbo relationship is viewed with suspicion and the parents are mostly gulty of tribalism cos there are the ones who even teach their children from infancy not to easily associate with other ethnic groups. Presidents have been even been know to be tribalists in political appoinments form the military through President Obansjo and even to Yaradua, thewy've all been known statistically to favour people from their own region or tribe. Tribalism is deeply rooted in our economy, govt and society and we have become used to it. The Indigenisation policy is not helping matters at all along with Admission catchments for UME students, bursary awards and so on. All these things encourage tribalism as they remind one that he doesn't belong and cannot be trusted.
